Poulter makes US Open, Wie misses out
06/06/2006
Ian Poulter has booked his place in the US Open following two superb rounds of qualifying at the Brookside golf and country club in Columbus, Ohio.
But teenage sensation Michelle Wie missed out on becoming the first woman to qualify for the major after a dismal round saw her fall five shots short.
England's Poulter, who has sunk to 72nd in the world rankings, shot rounds of 65 and 66 to lead a 144-man field and ensure he will be playing at Winged Foot next week.
His form arrives just in time after having endured another difficult season in which his best finish came back in February, when he shared sixth in the Johnnie Walker Classic.
But he, and American Duffy Waldorf who also qualified, will now be in a position to challenge for the season's second major, unlike Wie, the 16-year-old American, who could only manage rounds of 68 and 75.
"Obviously I'm disappointed that I didn't make it," Wie told reporters afterwards.
"But I'm satisfied with the way I tried. I played my hardest out there. Hopefully next year will be the year."
