Red-hot Parnevik takes Texas lead
05/10/2007
Sweden's Jesper Parnevik carded a career-best nine-under-par round of 61 to take a four-shot lead at the Texas Open in San Antonio.
The 42-year-old veteran, who has not won a PGA Tour event since 2001, recorded ten birdies in his round to overcome his opening-hole bogey five.
Starting from the tenth tee, Parnevik struggled along the first fairway with a wayward drive but recovered from the early setback by carding six birdies throughout the rest of the back nine.
He then picked up two more shots in the first three holes of the front nine before ending his round with back-to-back birdies to coast clear of the chasing pack.
A crowd of players are currently tied for second on five under par, including three of Parnevik's Swedish countrymen - Mathias Gronberg, Daniel Chopra and Richard S Johnson.
Americans Justin Leonard, Robert Gamez, Bob Tway, Matt Hendrix, Neal Lancaster and Dan Forsman are also in the ten-player group alongside Japan's Shigeki Maruyama.
The highest-placed player on the annual money-list taking part at the LaCantera golf club resort, Steve Flesch, endured a difficult day, carding a one-over-par 71.
