Rising star Kaymer clinches playoff victory in Munich

22/06/2008

Home favourite Martin Kaymer has won the BMW International after beating Anders Hansen in a playoff in Munich.

Kaymer threw away a six-stroke lead to finish level with Denmark's Hansen on 15-under.

But the German birded the first extra hole to seal victory and pocket a cheque for £262,752.

English trio Paul Casey, John Bickerton and Mark Foster were tied for third on 13 under, while Colin Montgomerie's 16th place was his best stroke play finish since January.

But it was Kaymer's day as he moves up to sixth in the Ryder Cup race.

The 23-year-old looked to have blown his chances of victory when he was on 38 at the turn. He then ran up a triple-bogey eight on the 11th, putting two balls in the lake short of the green.

Kaymer recovered by sinking birdies on the 13th and 18th, coming close to an eagle on the last hole with a 40-foot putt.

In the play-off Hansen was in two bunkers and three-putted for a bogey six, while Kaymer clinched victory by two-putting for a birdie.
Kaymer burst into tears during the presentation and dedicated the victory to his ill mother.

"Six shots is a lot, but it does not feel like that," the German added.

"I struggled a little bit and made a big mistake on the 11th. I thought I would make it easy with a five-iron, but got a little loft on the ball.

"I didn't keep my patience, but I will know for next time and I kept fighting."ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18649853-ADNFCR
