Rollins claims BC Open
24/07/2006
American golfer John Rollins has won the BC Open in New York after shooting a birdie at the final hole to secure a one-shot victory.
In an Open-depleted field, the 31-year-old Rollins sunk a five-foot putt to complete a final-round 64 and pip Bob May to the title.
"I knew it was a big putt, but I didn't know how big at the time," said Rollins, who finished on 19-under-par overall.
"It was not the easiest of putts to have when you need to make one to win but I just stepped up, told myself I'd made a 1,000 of them or more in my career, and rolled it in."
The win was Rollins' first for four years and only the second of his six-year career on the PGA Tour. He last won at the 2002 Canadian Open.
Japan's Shigeki Maruyama claimed third place, his best finish of the season, while American duo Omar Uresti and David Branshaw shared fourth.
Swedish star Gabriel Hjertstedt had led going into the final day but could manage only a 71 to end on 15 under in sixth place.
