Romero closes in on first Euro tour win
28/07/2007
Argentinean Andres Romero holds a two-shot lead over the rest of the field going into the final day of the Players' Championship of Europe at Germany's Gut Kaden.
After two opening rounds of 68, the 26-year-old seized the lead with a superb 63 to go to 17-under for the competition.
He claimed two eagles and five birdies as he pushed his way clear of his closest challenger Zane Scotland, whose solid form continued with a round of 66.
Romero will now hope he can keep the final-round demons at bay just a week after an error-strewn final two holes cost him a place in the Open title play-off at Carnoustie.
Should he manage to keep his nerve a win would represent Romero's first on the European tour.
"I feel confident on the course and I'm happy. I finished very well here last year as well and I'm going out as a leader now so it's good," he said.
Earlier in the day it had seemed that Englishman Scotland would be at the top of the leaderboard overnight after he opened with four birdies and an eagle on the first five holes.
But that blistering pace soon dropped away as he picked up four bogies to allow Romero to charge to the front.
Joint second-round leader Lee Slattery is a shot further back on 14-under while Sweden's Alexander Noren lies fourth on 13-under.
