Romero takes maiden PGA Tour title at Zurich Classic
31/03/2008
Argentinean youngster Andreas Romero has won his first PGA Tour title after a one-shot victory at the Zurich Classic in New Orleans.
Romero, who went round in a four-under-par 68, took advantage of overnight leader John Merrick's final-day collapse after the American carded a one-over-par round of 73 to drop from first to seventh overall.
Merrick failed to find any form to take him over the line, carding just one birdie and two bogeys, compared with the South American's five birdies and single bogey - a five on the par-four sixth hole.
Australia's Peter Lonard, who was tied with Romero in second after the third round, finished on three under par in his final round.
Rounds of the day went to Americans Tommy Armour III and James Driscoll, who finished tied for seventh and 12th, respectively, after carding six under par final rounds.
New Zealand's Tim Wilkinson also enjoyed a solid day but could only take third after his bogey-free round of five under par.
Padraig Harrington was Europe's top performer, going round in a three-under-par 69 to settle for a tie for fourth alongside Woody Austin and Nicholas Thompson.
