Romero wins first tour event
29/07/2007
Andres Romero won his first European tour event with victory in the Players' Championship of Europe in Hamburg today.
The Argentine player recorded a two-under-par 70 final round to finish three shots clear on 19 under par.
Denmark's Soren Hansen and England's Oliver Wilson finished tied for second with Australia's Peter O'Malley two shots further back on 14 under.
The victory follows a third-place finish at the Open in Carnoustie last week and takes the 26-year-old's earnings for the fortnight to more than £690,000, securing a five-year European Tour exemption.
"I feel great, I didn't expect my first win to come this quick but I played great in the Open last week and coming here I was thinking maybe it could be my time," said Romero.
"I won a lot of tournaments in Argentina and one two years ago in Manchester on the Challenge Tour but this is a big tournament with great players."
Romero had begun the day two shots clear but moved into a commanding five-shot lead after carding four birdies and a bogey in the first seven holes.
England's Oliver Wilson managed to reduce the lead to just two with a birdie at the 16th hole, on his way to a round on 66, but Romero avoided a repeat of his disastrous finish at Carnoustie and finished with a 25-foot putt for birdie and the championship on the 18th.
