Rose and Casey level Seve Trophy

29/09/2007

Justin Rose and Paul Casey levelled the Seve Trophy at 5-5 at the end of day two after beating Spanish pair Miguel Angel Jimenez and Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano by one hole.

Continental Europe began the day 3-2 ahead but Nick Faldo's Great Britain and Ireland won three of the four-ball matches to leave it all square.

Faldo's team were shocked by the injuries sustained by wildcard entry Marc Warren who shattered a chandelier in his room while practicing his swing and suffered cuts to his head, arms and stomach.

Despite this he started well in his match with Colin Montgomerie, against Raphaël Jacquelin and Gregory Havret, birdying the first two holes.

But the French pair came back to win the match 5&3, they had a combined score of ten-under-par after 15 holes giving Montgomerie and Warren little chance to gain a point.

Great Britain and Ireland fared better in the first match of the day where Bradley Dredge and Phillip Archer beat Peter Hanson and Robert Karlsson 5&4.

Dredge claimed seven birdies for his pairing as Faldo's men drew closer to Seve's team.

Oliver Wilson and Simon Dyson beat Thomas Bjorn and Soren Hansen 3&2 but Europe regained the lead when Mikko Ilonen and Markus Brier beat Nick Dougherty and Graeme Storm by one hole.

But Casey and Rose levelled things once more with a dramatic win over their Spanish opponents. The Englishmen were ahead at the turn and were three up with six holes to play before Jimenez and Fernandez-Castano mounted a fightback.

The Spaniards won the 13th and 15th holes but missed a vital putt at the 17th allowing Casey to hole a putt at the last to seal victory.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18299074-ADNFCR
