Rose continues to shine

25/05/2007

Englishman Justin Rose is tied for the lead at the halfway stage of the PGA Championship at Wentworth.

The 26-year-old fired a second round of 70 to lie in eight under par along with Argentina's Angel Cabrera.

Rose, who shared the overnight lead with compatriot Paul Broadhurst, stunned the crowd with a hat-trick of birdies in the final three holes.

He drilled in a 14-foot putt at the 16th before hitting the green in two at the 610-yard 17th and sinking two putts from 40 feet.

After a poor second shot on the par-five last hole, Rose held his nerve to complete a putt from eight feet for another birdie.

Rose said his hat-trick from the 16th capped off a difficult round.

"That turned a bad day into a good day," he explained.

"I didn't play that well, didn't hit enough fairways. I didn't seem to get the ball in play off the tee and therefore I was always struggling."

Cabrera fired an eagle on the second hole followed by four birdies to join Rose at the top of the leaderboard with a round of six-under 66.

Englishman Ross Fisher is tied for third along with Aussie Marcus Fraser on seven under after two birdies and an eagle in the last three holes.

Fisher said: "I am not just here to make up the numbers. I am here to win the tournament which I firmly believe I can do."

Ireland's Padraig Harrington lies a short further back after a solid round of 69 to join four other players on six under.
