Rose scrambles to Texas lead
22/09/2006
Justin Rose has carded an opening-round six-under-par 64 to grab a share of the lead in the Texas Open at La Cantera.
In a week dominated by the Ryder Cup clash at Dublin's K Club, the US-based Briton continued his fine form of late to join Alex Cejka atop the early leaders' board.
Rose is playing in his fourth straight event on the PGA Tour this week and has finished in the top 15 in each of his three previous tournaments.
This run included an impressive shared fourth finish at the Deutsche Bank Championship last week and he is clearly confident of improving on that here this weekend.
"My one concern for this week is running out of steam," he said. "So, obviously, I'm really happy with my round today."
The South African-born golfer turned pro in 1998 but after earning a decent name for himself in Europe has struggled to impress Stateside.
He became a full-time member of the PGA Tour two years ago yet is still winless but he feels his maiden tour title could finally be on the horizon.
"I learned slowly in Europe," he said. "Once I felt I really got my head around it and got comfortable there, I started to show really good results. Hopefully, it will be the same sort of thing on the PGA Tour."
