Ryder Cup mainstays dominate BMW International
02/09/2006
The second round of the BMW International event in Munich saw the established stars of the European Ryder Cup team show the kind of form they will hope to take to the K Club in three weeks time.
David Howell leads the field on 14-under-par, while Padraig Harrington and Colin Montgomerie are two shots back in a tie for second place.
Jose Maria Olazabal's absence from this tournament raised the hopes of a group of players hoping to steal the last automatic place in the team, but none of them look like capitalising on his non-appearance.
Paul Broadhurst is the closest to stealing the Spaniard's spot on the team; he is on six-under with a top three finish good enough to book his place.
Scandinavians Tomas Bjorn and Johan Edfors have probably given themselves too much to do on five and three-under respectively and will be at the mercy of captain Ian Woosnam and his wildcards.
Unfortunately for them one of their main rivals for Woosnam's favour, Lee Westwood, has outperformed them in Munich.
The Englishman is on nine-under and in pole position in the race to join Darren Clarke, who seems a certainty for the first, as the second wildcard.
