SBS Open victory ends Sorenstam's long wait
17/02/2008
Victory in the SBS Open in Hawaii has ended Annika Sorenstam's year-long wait for a tournament title.
The 37-year old Swede went into the season-opening event on the back of a winless 2007, the first season since 1994 in which she failed to win a ranking tournament.
However, after starting the final round tied in the lead with Erica Blasberg, it soon became clear that Sorenstam has managed to overcome a series of neck and back injuries, with the 37-year old finishing the event two strokes ahead of her nearest challengers at ten-under-par.
Her final round score of 69 came on the back of four birdies and one bogey.
She said of her win in Hawaii: "I'm obviously very, very thrilled. It's great to win tournaments. There's some tournaments that mean a little bit more and they come at a special time. I would say this is one of them."
Blasberg, however, had a nightmare of a final round, ending the day five points adrift of the top.
Thailand's Russamee Gulyanamitta finished in joint second place after four final round birdies saw her post a score of 68, while England's Karen Stupples and Johanna Head finished three under and one over respectively.
Last year's champion, Mexico's Lorena Ochoa, was not playing.
