Scott claims Memorial lead

02/06/2007

Australian Adam Scott is on 12-under par after two rounds of the Memorial Invitational in Ohio and leads by one shot ahead of countryman Rod Pampling.

Scott carded an incredible second round of ten-under to leap up from 30th at the start of the day. He heads a group of Australians who dominate the top of the leaderboard.

Pampling is on his own in second place after carding a round of four-under while fellow Australian Aaron Baddeley is tied with American Bubba Watson in third place a further shot back on ten-under-par.

Scott hit six birdies on the front nine and looked in unstoppable form when his streak continued over the first three holes of the back nine.

Despite missing a few putts towards the end of the round that could have lowered his score even further, including a bogey at the 16th, the 26-year-old was happy with his day's work.

He said: "My ball-striking and distance control and everything was pretty much spot on, with the exception of the tee shot on 16.

"It's probably the best ball-striking round I can remember."

Overnight co-leader Nick O'Hern fell to 12th place after a disastrous second day. Despite a birdie on the opening hole the American went on to drop three shots on the front nine.

Worse was to come when he took eight strokes at the 11th hole. Three birdies on the home stretch improved things but he still finished with a round of two-over-par.

Pampling, who had shared that lead with O'Hern, faired a little better. A quiet round where he picked up four birdies without a blemish means he is still in contention.
