Scott holds on to end title drought
06/11/2006
Adam Scott maintained his overnight lead at the season-ending PGA Tour Championship to finally end his title drought.
The 26-year-old Australian, who rises to fourth in the world on the back of this result, shot a closing-round 66 at East Lake in Atlanta to ease home by a comfortable three-shot margin.
His last win came almost two years ago when he picked up the Nissan Open title in February 2005 and he admits this win came as a huge relief.
"This really does make a big difference," Scott said afterwards. "I feel like all the hard work and everything I've put into it has actually paid off and I haven't come up short.
"I was pretty determined to finish it off today coming out here, and didn't want to throw away this opportunity as well as some others I had done earlier in the year.
"Christmas is going to be great now, and obviously going to the Mercedes-Benz Championship [to start next season] I'm going to be a lot happier."
Scott's achievement was hailed by American ace Jim Furyk who carded a best-of-the-day 65 to move into second place, ahead of first-round leader Joe Durant and world number six Retief Goosen.
Furyk said of Scott: "You prepare and you tee it up and you practice every week trying to win golf tournaments. You're not happy when you go without winning. But he's obviously played very consistent all year, and it's tough to do."
He added: "He's got a great game. He hits the ball extremely well. He's got a good swing, strikes it well, has some power, and has a good short game."
Meanwhile, England's Luke Donald shot a final-round 68 to end in a share of fifth place on three under par overall.
