Scott retains Memphis lead
10/06/2007
Australia's Adam Scott holds a three-shot advantage over David Toms and Brian Gay heading into the final round of the St Jude Championship in Memphis.
Scott, who held the overnight lead, fired in a round of two-under-par to take him to nine-under for the tournament.
Toms began the day tied for fifth place but is now right back in contention thanks to a round of 66 that included five birdies and one bogey.
Scott had a shaky front nine and dropped shots at the sixth and ninth holes to allow Gay to take the lead.
However the 26-year-old battled back with four birdies on the back nine to reclaim his place at the top of the leaderboard.
The Australian is cautiously optimistic about his chances on the final day and is not taking his three-stroke lead for granted.
He said: "Three shots is definitely not a big enough lead as far as I'm concerned. It'd be nice to get off to a good start tomorrow and make it hard for them to catch me."
Gay's strong start that allowed him to gain the lead for a while faded on the back nine as he picked up one birdie and two bogies, but he is still well placed on six-under.
Toms will be looking to repeat the success he had in this tournament in 2003 and 2004, having birdied three of the last seven holes.
England's Brian Davis is in fifth place after a round of 68 helped maintain his overnight position.
