Second finish has Rose dreaming of major victory

25/09/2006

Justin Rose secured his highest ever finish on the PGA Tour with a share of second place at the Valero Texas Open and then immediately turned his thoughts to ending Europe's drought for a major victory.

On a day dominated by Europe's Ryder Cup win at the K Club in Ireland, the US-based Briton fired a final-round 68 to end on 12 under overall, alongside Anthony Kim and Dean Wilson and just three shots behind the winner Eric Axley.

Rose's second place capped a superb four weeks for the South Africa-born golfer which has seen him finish fourth and 14th twice to significantly boost his money earnings for the year.

Speaking on his website afterwards, he said: "I definitely feel that there could have been a win in these four weeks, but it's been great to be back in position with a chance to win on the weekend.

"I feel like I have had to re-learn a couple of valuable lessons when it comes to what's required to win an event; like keeping your same rhythm on Sunday as you had all week, and also staying in the moment and patient and not trying to force it."

Turning his attention to the K Club and its possible benefits in next season majors, he added: "I thought the European boys played amazingly well and showed once again that European golf is in great shape.

"And I think a major victory has to be around the corner for any number of us. 1999 seems way too long ago that we tasted victory in a major. Watching the Ryder Cup definitely inspires me to make the team next time around. It really is an incredible event."
