Senden claims maiden Tour title
17/07/2006
Australian journeyman John Senden has secured his first PGA Tour title by winning the John Deere Classic in Illinois.
The 35-year-old, who turned professional back in 1992, carded a final-round three-under-par 68 to finish on 19 under overall, one shot clear of American JP Hayes.
Helped largely by his two stunning rounds of 64 on days one and three, Senden coasted to the finish line, picking up four birdies and a bogey during his final round.
Speaking after clinching his maiden title, Senden admitted: "I've been dreaming of it for a long while".
He added: "I always thought I could do it and it probably had to be a matter of time, because I was playing well the last couple of years.
"I've improved every single year on the tour. This year has been the best I've been striking it, the best results I've had."
Behind Senden and Hayes was German star Alex Cejka, who finished level on 16 under with American Heath Slocum.
US-based Brit Justin Rose, one of few Europeans competing on the US PGA Tour this week, shared 47th place after closing on seven under.
