Singh ends title drought
12/06/2006
Vijay Singh has got back to winning ways with a two-stroke victory over Adam Scott in the Barclays Classic in New York.
Singh had not won a title for 11 months prior to this weekend but an unprecedented third triumph at the Westchester country club will now send the Fijian to Winged Foot full of confidence.
A final round 68 proved sufficient for him as he closed on ten-under-par overall, helped largely by his best-of-the-week 64 on day two.
"This gives me a lot of confidence, put it that way," Singh admitted afterwards. "This gives me the feeling that if you get into contention, I can finish it off. Just getting into contention is a big thing out here."
The world number four added: "It makes people think that once they see my name up there, I'm back, so look out.
"I'm not trying to send any message out there. For myself, I'm playing well again, and I'm going to be a factor next week if I play like I did today. If I keep my head straight next week, I think I'll be a big factor."
First round leader Scott failed to reproduce his superb early form of 65 but did hang on to second place, one shot clear of US pair Brett Quigley and Billy Andrade.
England's Luke Donald capped a fine week in the states by shooting a final round 70 to finish in a share of fifth.
Donald will now also head into this week's US Open full of confidence as should Ian Poulter and David Howell, Europe's number one, who closed in contention in ninth and 13th place respectively.
