Singh pips Westwood to WGC title in Ohio
04/08/2008
Fijian Vijay Singh has edged out England's Lee Westwood and Australia's Stuart Appleby to win the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in Ohio.
The overnight leader carded a two-under-par final round of 68 to beat the chasing pack to the trophy by just one stroke, finishing on ten under par for the tournament.
Appleby, who was fourth overnight, matched Singh's final round but Westwood, who went into the final day tied for the lead, could only manage a one-under-par 69.
The round of the day went to Englishman Paul Casey, who climbed from joint 23rd to finish in a tie for eighth after a five-under-par 65 on Sunday thanks to a bogey-free round.
South Africa's Retief Goosen and American Phil Mickelson claimed joint fourth on eight under par overall, while Australia's Peter Lonard and an impressive showing from Northern Ireland's Darren Clarke ensured they shared sixth place.
Open champion Padraig Harrington had a good final day with a three-under-par 67, but he could only manage 20th place overall, while the runner-up behind the Irishman at Royal Birkdale, Ian Poulter, was one-over for his final round as he finished in a tie for 16th.
