Singh wins Palmer Invitational
19/03/2007
Vijay Singh overhauled a three-shot deficit to take the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill on the final day at the Florida tournament.
The big Fijian fired a three-under-par 67 to finish on eight-under overall, two shots clear of Rocco Mediate (-6) and three ahead of overnight leader Vaughn Taylor (-5).
Singh survived despite two bogeys in the last three holes, thanks in part to a disappointing round from Taylor when he dropped three shots on Sunday's round after being eight-under-par at the end of day three.
With his 31st PGA tour title, Singh equals the record of Englishman Harry Cooper, a star in the early part of this century, as the non-US player with the most wins on American soil.
"I wanted to win this one after so many near misses," the Fijian star, a three-time runner up at Bay Hill, said. "I owe it to this tournament.
"I think that it was my starting point on the US tour so I always thought that this tournament meant a lot to me."
Tiger Woods, playing at the course nearest his Florida home, suffered a nightmare back-nine as he carded 43 – his joint-worst nine holes ever in a tournament – leaving him on three-over in joint-22nd place.
Sergio Garcia was the highest-placed European player, finishing joint fifth after a one-over-par round of 71 on the final day.
