Sorenstam and Wie crash out of Match Play
09/07/2006
Annika Sorenstam and Michelle Wie have both exited the Women's World Match Play Championship in New Jersey, ending hopes of a dream clash in the final.
Both players were knocked out in the quarter-finals by unfancied opponents, despite both playing some quality golf at times.
Wie, still only 16-years-old, was beaten by Brittany Lincicome from the US and in doing so misses out on the opportunity to contest the $500,000 prize in today's final.
Lincicome, in truth, was in control of this encounter from the outset and was able to steal advantages at the fourth, fifth, 10th and 13th holes before finishing the job at the 15th against a struggling Wie.
The Hawaiian-born teenager was not too despondent, however, and predicted an improved display at next week's John Deere Classic on the men's tour.
"I thought I played really well. I just had a lot of bad breaks," she said.
"Obviously, I'm disappointed that I didn't win, but I still feel satisfied with the way I played."
Sorenstam's defeat came in more spectacular fashion, when American Juli Inkster birdied four of the last five holes to record a 1-up victory.
Like Wie, Sorenstam was pragmatic in defeat and simply attributed the shock result to a dazzling display from her opponent.
Inkster will now face teenager Paula Creamer in one semi-final, while the other will be contested by Lincicome and Mexican Lorena Ochoa.
