"Stable" Ballesteros recovering from 12-hour surgery

15/10/2008

Seve Ballesteros has been described as being in a "stable" condition as he recovers in hospital after undergoing a mammoth operation to remove a brain tumour.

The veteran golfer, 51, was diagnosed over the weekend and despite only being due in for a biopsy and further tests on the problem, surgeons took the decision to undertake a full operation to remove the tumour.

The 12-hour surgery at Madrid's La Paz hospital was described as "satisfactory".

Ballesteros is one of the game's best-known players, having won five major titles in a glittering career.

He was taken ill while at Madrid airport just over a week ago and complained of dizziness before he briefly lost consciousness.

According to Spanish sports daily Marca, Ballesteros' ex-wife Carmen Botin and his three children were all present at the hospital while the surgery was performed.

And he is now reported to be recovering well, although surgeons will not be able to fully assess the success of the operation for a few days.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18827755-ADNFCR
