Storm moves in at PGA
10/08/2007
England's Graeme Storm has taken a surprise first-round lead at the final major of the year, the USPGA Championships in Tulsa.
The 29-year-old carded a five-under-par round of 65 on the first day of the 89th championships from the Southern Hills Country Club and leads by two shots from American veteran John Daly.
Storm's bogey-free round moved him clear of a talented group of players near the top of the leaderboard, including top European players Markus Brier, Lee Westwood and Padraig Harrington who are all on one-under-par.
World number one Tiger Woods set off at a blistering pace, going to three under par after the first five holes but fell back later in his round to finish the day on a disappointing one-over.
England's Justin Rose and Spain's Segio Garcia, the man who finished runner-up at the Open Championship to Harrington last month, carded even-par rounds of 70.
But it was French Open champion Storm that took control after day one.
"I've been really struggling the last few weeks," he said afterwards.
"Maybe a bit of fatigue came in after the French Open. I haven't had time to reflect on it.
"I had no expectations coming into this week. I shot 18-over last week so I just decided to forget technique, forget everything. I'm ecstatic."
