Strong Singh takes Deutsche Bank win
02/09/2008
Three birdies in four holes set Vijay Singh on his way to a win at Boston's Deutsche Bank Championship.
The Fijian golfer shot a final-round 63 to finish 22-under at the PGA tournament, five shots ahead of nearest rival Mike Weir of Canada.
Singh had been in a group at the turn but, starting at 11, put together his three birdies in four holes to move ahead of the crowd.
Ernie Els and Camilo Villegas tied for third while Sergio Garcia, who suffered a bogey at the ninth after a promising start, slumped back to tied fifth.
"That was awesome. All I can say is well done to Vijay," Garcia said.
The 45-year-old's win means he has established a virtually unbeatable lead in the race for the playoff £5 million bonus.
Singh has also now equalled the number of career victories achieved by Phil Mickelson.
Among active players the pair now have the highest win tally, with one exception Tiger Woods.
