Super Sorenstam seals winning return
04/09/2006
Annika Sorenstam has claimed the 69th victory of her career thanks to a stunning closing round of ten-under-par at the State Farm Classic.
The Swedish world number one overcame a five-shot deficit to seal a two-shot triumph over 2004 champion Cristie Kerr.
Her final-round score equalled the LPGA Tour record for the lowest final round by a winner and also tied the tournament record tally.
"I feel really good right now," she admitted afterwards. "I knew I had to post a low score.
"To come from five behind, and to win by two, it's pretty amazing. It's something that I'm going to remember for quite sometime."
Sorenstam added that this third win of the season was possibly her most memorable as it comes after weeks of swing trouble.
"This win feels so good because I have been working so hard on my swing for so long and I just haven't felt like I have been able to finish," she explained.
"I think today I felt like I was in control most of the day. The key for me was to be able to start well and to finish it. I didn't feel like I left too much out there. Hopefully I'm changing the trend I have been doing for the last few months."
Third-round leader Maria Hjorth ended in a share of third place alongside Il Mi Chung and rookie Seon-Hwa Lee at 16-under-par.
