Swede Edfors clinches Scottish Open
16/07/2006
Sweden's Johan Edfors carded a stunning final-round of 63 to triumph in the Scottish Open at Loch Lomond.
The 30-year old's eight-under par was the lowest of the tournament to gatecrash a showdown between veterans Darren Clarke and Tomas Bjorn who finished three strokes behind on ten-under.
England's Luke Donald boosted his Ryder Cup chances after finishing second on 11-under along with South Africa's Charl Schwartzel and Argentine Andres Romero.
Edfors was an outsider for the title going into the final round having been six shots behind the leaders Bjorn and Clarke.
But the Swede, who won the British Masters at the Belfry in May, fired nine birdies from 14 holes to surge to the top of the leaderboard where he remained until the end to pocket a winners' cheque of £400,000 pounds.
In the final stages of his round he made three more birdies before a dropping a shot on the 17th hole.
Edfors, who won his first career title in China in March, said it was an anxious wait for Clarke and Bjorn to complete their rounds.
"It was a tough wait," he said.
"I played well on Thursday and Friday so I knew the game was there."
He added he was angry with himself after yesterday's round which put him well down the leaderboard.
"I was very upset with myself after yesterday's 74, I went out and played rubbish, horrible," he said.
"I worked for an hour after the round and got off to a good start today with a birdie on two and then made it four birdies in a row on seven and felt good."
Edfors produced a similar late-show to win the British Open, winning by a single stroke having been three shots back going into the final round.
He becomes the first European to win three titles this season, which completes a remarkable comeback for the Swede having lost his European tour card in 2004 after a disappointing season.
