Tiger dedicates victory to father
23/07/2006
An emotional Tiger Woods has dedicated his successive Open victory to his late father, who died from cancer earlier this year.
Woods' third Open overall is his 11th Major title in total, and maintains his record of never having surrendered a lead in a Major after 36 holes.
The 30-year-old emphatically punched the air after finishing on 18 under for the tournament at Hoylake's final hole, but quickly broke down in tears as he remembered his father Earl, in what was only his third outing since his father died in May.
"Steve (Williams, Woods' caddy) said to me as we were coming up the last, 'this one is for dad'. All these emotions just poured out of me. It feels like they have been locked in there," he said.
Woods added that he was only sad his father was not around to see him triumph, with the golfer now on course to better Jack Nicklaus' record of 18 Majors.
"I just miss my dad so much, I wish he could have been here to witness this. He thoroughly enjoyed watching me grind out major wins and this would have brought a smile to his face," he added.
