Tiger roars to victory by eight strokes
01/10/2006
Tiger Woods has sealed his sixth consecutive stroke play title after cruising to victory by eight shots in the World Golf Championship in Hertfordshire.
After a nightmare two weeks with America's defeat in the Ryder Cup and losing in the first round of the World Matchplay Championship, the world number one returned to what he does best at the Grove.
The American finished on 23 under par on a final day disrupted by thunderstorms, with England's Ian Poulter his main challenger on fifteen under.
Woods' compatriot Jim Furyk was one stroke behind, a place he shared with Australian Adam Scott.
Ryder Cup heroes David Howell and Padraid Harrington failed to repeat their displays at the K Club last week, finishing on eight under and seven under respectively.
But Woods steamrolled to victory with a final round of 67 having started the day leading by six shots.
The victory margin could have been greater had Woods not struggled with his putting.
He missed out on a fourth consecutive eagle on the 18th but knocked in the birdie putt to pocket a cheque for more than $1 million (£683,778).
Nearly three hours of play were lost of the final round due to the weather in the last WGC Championships.
Woods was playing his sixth tournament in the last seven weeks but continued his emphatic winning streak since triumphing in the Open at Hoylake.
