Tiger wants major to end barren run

08/08/2007

Tiger Woods is focussing on winning the US PGA title this weekend after being denied a major victory so far this season.

Woods is the defending champion of the event and wants to add the 2007 crown to his wins in 1999 and 2000.

The world number one warmed-up for the event in Tulsa, Oklahoma, with a win at the WGC Bridgestone Invitational last week and feels he is coming into form at the right time.

He said: "Golf-wise it has been pretty good but not great. I just think the major championships are valued that highly, and I've come close. I just have not got it done yet.

"You never want to have a year where you do not win a major championship. This year I have come close in two, and it just did not happen. I have been in this situation before.

"You go out to win, period. That is why I am here. The whole idea is to win."

Woods praised the officials at Southern Hills for creating a competitive course and said he preferred it when the scoring was made difficult.

He added that it was becoming harder to win a major title as there were new players emerging that were capable of challenging at each event.

"You do not have the same collection of guys any more," said Woods.

"We are seeing new faces springing up and this year [three first-time winners at the first three majors of the season] is an example of that."
