Title drought over for Pavin
31/07/2006
Corey Pavin, the former US Open champion, has ended his ten-year wait for a victory on the PGA Tour by claiming the US Bank Championship title in Milwaukee.
Pavin, 46, last won a Tour title way back on May 19th 1996 at the MasterCard Colonial event in Fort Worth, Texas.
But he finally ended his drought this weekend by storming to 20-under-par and two shots clear of playing partner and crowd favourite Jerry Kelly.
The American had started the week with a record-breaking 26 on the opening front nine and he admitted this helped inspire him to his long-awaited triumph.
"I would hate to be the guy who shot a 26 to start a tournament and didn't win," Pavin joked afterwards.
"The journey that I have taken over the past ten years to get here, all the work I have put in, what I have gone through, makes it very meaningful to me to get back here."
When asked if his lack of success had made him even contemplate calling it a day, Pavin revealed he had never lost faith in his ability.
"If I didn't think I was going to win again, then I wouldn't be out here playing golf," he admitted. "I really believed deep down that I can win."
