Wagner seals Houston Open title after solid final round
07/04/2008
American Johnson Wagner carded a one-under-par round of 71 on the final day to maintain his lead and win the Houston Open by two shots.
Despite succumbing to nerves and shooting three bogies on the last day, Wagner also grabbed birdies on the second, fourth, eighth and 13th holes to maintain his advantage over countryman Chad Campbell.
By the end of the round, Wagner's lead at 16 under par for the tournament - had been extended to two shots following a series of slips by the other top players.
Campbell himself carded a double-bogey seven at the eighth and further bogies at the second, fourth and 16th holes as he managed only even par for the day.
Australia's Geoff Ogilvy moved into a tie for second by going four under par at the Redstone golf course, while Fred Couples and Billy Mayfair tied for fourth on 13 under par overall.
Wagner's victory gives him the final berth at the Masters, which takes place at Augusta this week as a PGA Tour tournament winner.
