Wakefield tied for lead at Gleneagles

31/08/2007

Englishman Simon Wakefield shares the lead with Thomas Levet at the halfway stage of the Johnnie Walker Championship.

Wakefield overcame the blustery conditions at Gleneagles to fire a second round of 69 to lie on nine under.

Frenchman Levet birdied the last hole to go round in 68 to join Wakefield at the top of the leaderboard.

Scotland's Marc Warren, who led on the opening day after a stunning round of 65, struggled in the windy conditions and managed a level-par 72.

Warren is one stroke off the lead while England's Philip Archer is on seven under after a second round of 71.

Graeme Storm (70) and compatriot David Lynn (68) are three shots off the lead.

Wakefield, 34, said he was hoping to keep his cool in his quest for his maiden European Tour win.

"I feel more comfortable on Thursday and Friday," Wakefield said.

"For some reason Saturday is always the day that I don't enjoy. It's moving day, but I tend to move the other way.

"It's not that I dislike them - I think it's the hardest day. You've made the cut and you suddenly relax and don't try too hard."

Meanwhile, Warren admitted that the course conditions were to blame for his disappointing round.

"It was a tougher day than yesterday. There was more wind and the greens were not as good," Warren said.

Elsewhere, defending champion Paul Casey in on four-under, one shot ahead of Colin Montgomerie (74) and Lee Westwood (69). ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18264716-ADNFCR
