Webster leads at Carnoustie

04/10/2007

Englishman Steve Webster carded a superb seven-under-par 65 to take a one shot lead at the end of the first round of the Dunhill Links Championships at Carnoustie today.

Webster had been out of action for the past month due to a back problem, but he showed no signs of the injury as he broke 70 for a round for the first time at the famous course.

Four players, including Paul Lawrie and Denmark's Soren Hansen, are leading the chasing pack on six-under-par. Luke Donald and Ernie Els are also well placed on five-under-par.

"I've had five weeks of treatment from the tour physios so my back is much better now," said Webster.

"It's always best to play this course when it's calm and the greens were perfect so you had to take advantage.

"I'm not getting carried away, but I'm delighted because I've never broken 70 at Carnoustie before."

Defending champion Padraig Harrington, who also won the Open at Carnoustie, fired a two-under-par 70.

"I spent a lot of the round reliving the shots from the Open," revealed Harrington.

"The fact that I'm the Open champion probably put a little bit of extra expectation on me, so I'm pretty pleased with myself."ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18305944-ADNFCR
