Webster seals victory in Portugal
21/10/2007
England's Steve Webster fired a final round of 64 to win the Portugal Masters in Vilamoura.
The 32-year-old finished on 25-under after carding the best winning final round on the European Tour this season.
Webster finished two strokes clear of Sweden's Robert Karlsson while England's Lee Westwood and Soren Hansen of Denmark were a further two shots behind on 19 under.
Starting the day one shot behind Argentina's Daniel Vancsik, Webster went into the joint lead with 32 on the front nine.
He then sunk a nine-foot eagle on the 12th followed by three birdies in the next five holes.
The Englishman then wisely chose to avoid the water down the left-hand side on the 18th and made a bogey to clinch victory.
An emotional Webster collected the winner's cheque for nearly £350,000 and then collapsed in tears, in memory of his mum Valerie who died this year.
"I was thinking about her all the way round. Losing my mum really knocked me about. I didn't even think I'd get my card because it was quite tough," Webster said.
"It was so hard to keep my mind on my golf. I knew she was watching out for me and it's an amazing feeling to play that well down the stretch.
"It was so hard out there, especially coming down the stretch, because I was thinking about my mum all the time and it was so hard to keep my mind on the golf. But I knew she was looking down on me."
