Weekley enjoys good start in Memphis
06/06/2008
Boo Weekley holds a one-shot lead following the first round of the Stanford St Jude Championship in Memphis after carding a five-under-par 65.
The American picked up six shots - including opening his round with back-to-back birdies - and registered just one bogey at the par-three fourth hole to take an overnight lead into Friday.
Weekley's approach play was particularly good but he said he was most pleased with his putting, which he admitted he had been working on since his last round at the same course.
"I went around there and hit a lot of putts Saturday and Sunday," Weekley told the Associated Press news agency.
"Being able to go and practice by yourself on a golf cart makes it a lot easier. You're not as tired, and you can work a little bit more out there."
Countryman Tommy Armour III sits second after a four-under-par 66 at the Southwind course in Tennessee, with Fiji's Vijay Singh a further shot back on three under par.
A seven-man group on two under par are still in contention and tied for fourth, which includes Spain's Sergio Garcia, Australia's Stuart Appleby and the United States' Justin Leonard and Davis Love III.
