Wentworth joy sees Casey's stock rise
18/09/2006
Paul Casey is the 17th best golfer in the world, according to the latest world rankings.
The Englishman stormed to victory in the World Match Play Championship at Wentworth this weekend, beating Colin Montgomerie and Michael Campbell on the way to his win.
And he has now been rewarded by a dramatic rise in the rankings, earning his best-ever position and making himself the sixth-highest ranked European ahead of this weekend's Ryder Cup.
Tiger Woods still tops the list, with fellow Americans Phil Mickelson and Jim Furyk behind him in second and third respectively.
Fiji's Vijay Singh is in fourth and Australia's Adam Scott is fifth, with South African duo Retief Goosen and Ernie Els ahead of highest-ranked European Sergio Garcia, who is in eighth.
Luke Donald remains in the top ten at ninth, but his countryman Lee Westwood has dropped out of the top 50, meaning he is likely to miss the American Express World Championship at the Grove in Hertfordshire in two weeks' time.
Casey, meanwhile, has sought to downplay his chances of helping the European Ryder Cup side to victory at the K Club in Dublin next weekend after his impressive display at Wentworth.
"Whatever's happened this week I don't think you can predict what's going to happen next week," Casey said.
"It's 18-hole matches, a lot of pressure, 12 guys against 12 guys.
"This has certainly given me a lot of match play practice and given me a taste of what long days there are going to be, but I don't know if this win means I'm any better at match play than I was before this event started."
