Westwood climbs to 12th in world rankings

04/08/2008

Britain's Lee Westwood has climbed six positions in the world rankings to 12th as a result of his runner-up finish at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone Country Club.

Westwood tied for second place with Stuart Appleby in Ohio, one shot behind winner Vijay Singh. Had Westwood won the tournament he would have moved into fourth place in the world rakings.

As it stands, Westwood is on top of the European Ryder Cup standings, ahead of Open winner Padraig Harrington in second.

Justin Rose remains in 10th and last automatic place in Europe's Ryder Cup table.

The top 10 who would earn places in Faldo's side as things stand are Westwood, Harrington, Henrik Stenson, Miguel Angel Jimenez and Robert Karlsson from the world list.

Graeme McDowell, Oliver Wilson, Soren Hansen, Martin Kaymer and Rose will all qualify off the separate table based on European earnings.

If that remains unchanged, Ryder Cup captainn Nick Faldo will have to select two wild card entries from a list which includes Sergio Garcia, Ian Poulter, Paul Casey, Colin Montgomerie and Darren Clarke.
