Westwood ends drought
13/05/2007
Lee Westwood won his first European Tour title in four years after victory at the Andalucia Open in Spain.
The Englishman carded a final round of 67 to finish on 20-under-par for the tournament, two shots ahead of fellow Briton Phillip Archer (65) and Sweden's Fredrik Andersson (66).
Westwood, who led by one stroke coming into the final round, was at 31 after nine holes to stretch his lead to five shots.
But the former European number one saw his lead sliced after three bogeys in five holes.
Archer and Andersson moved within one shot of Westwood but the 34-year-old birdied the 16th before sealing victory with a nervy 40-foot putt on the 18th and in doing so avoid a three-way playoff.
Westwood pockets a winners' cheque of £113,612 after securing his 17th tour title and boosts his chances of a return to Europe's top 50.
The showdown between Westwood and Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano failed to materialise after the home favourite carded a final round of 72 to finish joint seventh.
The Spaniard trailed Westwood by just one stroke at the start of the day and had been bidding for back-to-back Tour titles.
South African Louis Oosthuizen and Michael Jonzon of Sweden were both round in 69 to share fourth at 16-under-par while Denmark's Thomas Bjorn finished sixth on 15-under.
