Wetterich retains Augusta lead

07/04/2007

Brett Wetterich remains on top of the US Masters leaderboard after shooting a round of 73 to share first place with South African Tim Clark at two-under-par.

The American had shared the overnight lead with England's Justin Rose, but on another difficult day for scoring the American's consistency allowed him to stay ahead while Rose dropped back.

Bogies at the 15th and 16th holes marred what had otherwise been a mistake-free round from Wetterich, who is bidding to win the tournament at his first attempt.

Clark picked up four birdies during his round but a double-bogey six at the fifth hole cost him dearly. Despite this slip it was another solid round from last year's runner-up.

Rose slipped back to level-par for the tournament after sloppy bogies at the first and last holes cost him his share of the lead, but the Englishman remains in contention two shots behind.

Vaughan Taylor is in second place after carding an even round to leave him at one-under while Rose is joined by the likes of Vijay Singh and Zach Johnson at level-par at the halfway stage.

Tiger Woods suffered another round of mixed fortunes. After picking up four bogies on the front nine and finding the water trap on two consecutive holes on the back nine the world number one rallied for a round of two-over for the day.

Ireland's Padraig Harrington put himself back in contention with the round of the day. His four-under-par 68 included seven birdies and leaves him just three shots off the lead on one-over for the tournament.
