Wie Open hopes ended
15/07/2006
Michelle Wie's hopes of becoming the first woman to play at the British Open are over after she was forced to retire from the John Deere Classic.
The 16-year-old needed to finish in the top-ten at the event in Illinois but stopped at the ninth hole in her second round, complaining of stomach pains and shortness of breath.
She was already struggling at the event after a six-over par first round and was two-over par in her second round when she withdrew.
The Classic is led at the halfway stage by American Joe Ogilvie on ten-under par after a four-under par second round of 67.
Ogilvie is one shot clear of a quartet of players, including Swede Daniel Chopra and Australian John Senden.
In all, there are 13 players all within three shots of the leader.
England's Justin Rose is another who needs a top-ten finish to make it to the Open and his chances improved significantly on day two after a five-under par round of 66.
He shot six birdies in all, four in the first eight holes, to make big gains on the leaderboard after a level-par first round.
However, fellow Englishman John E Morgan failed to make the cut, despite a three-under par second round of 68, which included four birdies in the first nine holes.
