Williams dismisses Woods split

15/07/2007

Tiger Woods' caddie has rubbished reports he will split from the world number one.

Steve Williams was reportedly set to retire at the end of the year after eight years partnering the American.

Woods, who will start as the favourite for Thursday's Open at Carnoustie, was rumoured to have approached Darren Clarke's caddie Billy Foster as a replacement.

But a furious Williams has insisted he will remain with the American.
"I need to get a few people off my back over this," Williams told New Zealand's Sunday Star-Times.

"A rumour started last week that I was to retire at the end of the year and there's no truth to that rumour. If I was to retire, Tiger would be the first one to know.

"I have no idea where this has come from. Perhaps Tiger may not play as much now that he's a father but that doesn't make any difference to my job.

"I caddie for Tiger whenever he plays and he doesn't play a lot as it is now."

Williams is a dirt track champion in New Zealand and wants to pursue a career in motorsport.

But the Kiwi said he has no plans yet to quit caddying for the 12-time Major winner.

"That's (motorsport) something that I'd like to do but caddying for the world number one player is a bit more profitable and meaningful," he added.

"Once I finish caddying it's something I'd entertain doing. Every now and again there's a chance to miss a golf tournament because there's a major race meeting on but I've only missed one tournament because of a race meeting."
