Wonder round gives Woods fifth consecutive win
05/09/2006
Tiger Woods has sensationally won his fifth consecutive PGA Tour event after a stunning final-round 63 at the Deutsche Bank Championship.
The world number one had begun the fourth round in Boston three shots behind overnight leader Vijay Singh but an emphatic outward 30 saw him overhaul the Fijian.
Woods carded two eagles and two birdies between the second and seventh holes before he picked up two more shots on the way in en route to a brilliant two-shot triumph.
Playing alongside him, Singh simply had no answer to Woods' relentless march. Having fired a course-record 61 on day three, the former leading player could add only a 68 as he saw his lead smashed away.
Speaking afterwards, Woods admitted: "It's nice when you get on a roll like this where the things are just happening.
"I got some lucky breaks, some great bounces. This isn't all about hitting perfect shots and making every putt. That's a lot of luck on my side and a lot of things have to go right."
Woods, ever modest, also played down his chances of closing in further on Byron Nelson's record 11-straight victory run set way back in 1945.
"In this day and age and the competition, to win 11 in a row would almost be unheard of," he said.
"What Byron accomplished, that right there goes down to probably one of the greatest years in the history of our sport. Consistency I mean you got to have one bad week somewhere. He never did. His bad week was a win, I guess. So it's I mean it's truly amazing.
"I know that there were a lot of different circumstances. It was one of those, the field's weren't as strong, it was one of the war years, but still, I just think that what Byron accomplished there goes down as one of the greatest streaks in all of sport."
