Woods becomes father
19/06/2007
Tiger Woods has become a father for the first time after his wife Elin gave birth to a baby girl.
The 31-year-old's daughter, named Sam Alexis Woods, was born early yesterday morning and is said to be "doing well".
Woods, who is notoriously reserved about his private life, placed an announcement on his personal website to announce the birth.
"Elin and I are delighted to announce the birth of our daughter, Sam Alexis Woods," the statement read.
"Both Elin and Sam are doing well and resting peacefully. We want to thank our doctors and the hospital staff for all their dedicated and hard work.
"This is truly a special time in our lives and we look forward to introducing Sam to our family and friends over the next few weeks. We thank everyone for their well wishes and continued respect of our privacy."
Woods had said he would be prepared to disrupt his playing schedule this summer in order to accommodate his wife and their first child, including missing one or more of the major tournaments to be present at the birth.
In the end the event was well-timed from this perspective, as the world number one was able to compete at the US Open over the weekend before joining his wife immediately after his final round at Oakmont on Sunday.
It is thought Woods will now also compete at the British Open, where he is a three-time champion, next month after saying he would miss the tournament if it clashed with his daughter's birth.
