Woods cements Grove lead
29/09/2006
Tiger Woods has shot a second-round 64 to continue his stunning strokeplay form and ensure, ominously, he heads into the weekend of the WGC Championship at the Grove in Hertfordshire as the clubhouse leader.
The world number one, who carded a breathtaking eight-under-par 63 yesterday, nearly repeated that feat by shooting five birdies and, for the second round running, eagling the par-five 18th.
His faultless round today took him to 15-under-par overall, an electric pace which gave him a five-shot cushion over fellow American Jim Furyk.
Furyk was joined in the chasing pack by David Howells and Stewart Cink, all of whom stand on ten under.
The latter had a comparatively inconsistent round, impressing with an eagle on the 18th but clumsily bogeying the eighth, while Howells' round of 66 included seven birdies.
Ireland's Padraig Harrington, desperate for a prolonged run of good form following his Ryder Cup disappointment, shot a second-round 69 to add to his 64 and close in contention on nine under.
The ever-solid Ernie Els is also hovering nearby after he carded a satisfactory 70 to reach seven under, the same tally as England's Ian Poulter who slipped down from second place overnight with a disappointing 71.
