Woods claims BMW title
10/09/2007
World number one Tiger Woods has won his 60th career title on the PGA Tour after carding a final-round 63 at Cog Hill to win the BMW Championship.
In doing so, Woods equalled the course record and took a commanding lead in the FedEx Cup standings ahead of the final tournament at East Lake this week.
The American had started the day in third behind joint leaders Aaron Baddeley and Steve Stricker, but Woods showed his class to out-gun the pair over the final 18 holes.
A bogey-free round with eight birdies, three of which came in quick succession on the seventh, eighth and ninth holes, eclipsed the efforts of Baddeley, who also carded four birdies on the first nine.
However a bogey on the par-three sixth gave the imperious Woods the opening he needed and he hammered home his advantage on the run in with four more birdies on the 12th, 13th, 15th and 16th.
Stricker had to endure a difficult final day as he plummeted out of contention with four bogeys in his round of 68, three under par.
Nevertheless he remains in contention for the $10 million (£4.9 million) bonus for the overall winner in the FedEx Cup, and should he manage a victory in the final tournament at the weekend he will win the record-breaking purse outright.
The same applies for Woods, who leads the overall standings, and world number two Phil Mickelson remains in contention but will be relying on other players' positions to claim the overall win.
Rory Sabbattini and KJ Choi are the only other players capable of claiming victory in the tournament series, but are also reliant on results elsewhere.
