Woods holds nerve to force US Open playoff

16/06/2008

Tiger Woods holed a pressure birdie putt on the 18th green to take the US Open into a fifth day and a sudden-death playoff against Rocco Mediate.

The world number one needed to sink the 12-foot attempt to move to one under par for the tournament, and duly obliged to set up another meeting with Mediate at noon, local time, on Monday.

The two Americans tied at the top of the leaderboard as the first men to go under par at the US Open since 2004, despite Woods carding two over on the final day.

Mediate made an even-par 71 to move up from third going into the last round.

Englishman Lee Westwood equalled Woods' score of a two-over 73 in the final round to finish in a respectable third place overall at even-par for the tournament.

Robert Karlsson moved up two places to finish in a tie for fourth with DJ Trahan after the Swede shot a 71.

And fellow European Miguel-Angel Jimenez from Spain completed a solid outing ahead of the Ryder Cup later this year with a sixth-placed finish alongside Karlsson's countryman Carl Pettersson.

The round of the day went to American Heath Slocum, whose incredible six-under-par 65 helped him jump 48 places on the leaderboard to finish on four over for the tournament.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18639180-ADNFCR
