Woods holds on for WGC win

26/03/2007

Tiger Woods held on despite an inconsistent final round to retain his title at the WGC-CA Championship in Florida.

The world number one carded five bogeys and finished one-over-par on the day but the four-shot lead he took from the first three rounds proved enough to secure victory for the third year in a row.

Runner-up Brett Wetterich failed to take advantage of Woods' patchy play, managing only a one-under round of 71 to finish two shots behind.

And none of the other players in the field put the American under any real pressure as he cruised on the front nine – going out in 35.

A relatively poor back nine was not punished by any of his opponents and despite solid finishes by Robert Allenby, Sergio Garcia and Geoff Ogilvy, who all tied for third on six-under for the tournament.

"I love this golf course," Woods said after his victory at the Doral course in Florida.

"I've always played well here, and when it was decided that we were going to come [to Miami] I just thought that this was a wonderful opportunity for me to win the championship."

Woods' opponents also reserved praise for his play, despite the fact that he appeared to be off the boil.

"He's just better than us," said Ogilvy.

The tournament was the final chance for the players involved to prepare for the Masters at Augusta, which begins later this week. Woods will be gunning for revenge after losing out to fellow American Phil Mickelson in last year's event.
