Woods hoping to play through Faldo feud
19/07/2006
Tiger Woods and Nick Faldo will provide a fascinating subplot to the first round of the British Open this weekend.
Relations between the two have been somewhat frosty since Faldo, one of Britain's greatest ever golfers, criticised Woods' swing on the ABC television network.
While Faldo seems happy to shake and make up, the current world number one is intent on focussing on his game.
"I'll be in my world trying to compete and trying to win the championship, and I'm sure he'll probably do the same thing," Woods told his website.
On the question of whether or not he would shake Faldo's hand, he added: "I don't know. I really don't know. It's up to him."
Woods goes into the Open looking to recapture his form after the death of his father, Earl.
The 30-year-old took a break from golf after the US Masters to mourn his loss, returning in time for the US Open where he missed the cut.
Looking ahead to this weekend's major at Hoylake, Woods appears to be relishing the chance to get his game back.
"It's going to be a fantastic challenge this week to play a golf course this fast," he said. "We don't get a chance to do this very often, but when we do, it sure brings back shot making and creativity back in the game."
Woods is the defending champion having won the Open for the first time last year. Since 1997 he has collected ten majors.
