Woods misses cut
17/06/2006
Tiger Woods has missed the cut at a major for the first time in his career as a second successive 76 left him 12-over par at the halfway stage of the US Open.
The world number one has not played for nine weeks because of the death of his father and struggled on both rounds, making three bogeys and two double-bogeys in his six-over par round.
"I thought I was playing well enough to shoot under par today and I didn't do that," Woods said.
"The golf course is very difficult, the wind is up now and marginal shots are just getting killed here, more so than any other US Open course we play."
However, Woods was not the only high-profile name not to make it to the final 36 holes as defending champion Michael Campbell, two-time champion Retief Goosen and Spain's Sergio Garcia all finished below the cut-line.
New Zealander Campbell was level with Woods on 12-over after a seven-over par 77 on day two, while Goosen went round in an eight-over par 78 to finish on 15-over.
Garcia made his second successive 78 of the tournament to leave himself on 16-over.
The quartet were part of the 93-strong group that failed to get within ten shots of the lead, out of the 156 that started on Thursday.
Other names not to make it into the weekend included Ireland's Paul McGinley at 10-over, South African Tim Clark at 11-over, England's Nick Dougherty at 13-over and American Davis Love III at 14-over.
