Woods moves into WGC lead

24/03/2007

Tiger Woods carded the round of the day to claim the lead of the World Golf Championships-CA Championship heading into the weekend's play.

The world number one shot a round of six-under-par that elevated him from tenth to first place overnight and a two shot lead at seven-under-par after the second round.

It was a faultless display by Woods who made birdies on the opening two holes and then three consecutive birdies on the opening stretch of the back nine and a final one at the 17th.

Woods said: "No dropped shots and under these conditions, I'm very proud of that.

"You don't ever want to drop a shot. The psychological difference between dropping a shot and making a birdie, I just think it's bigger to make a par putt. And I was able to make those."

Australian Rod Pampling is two shots back in second place after a round of three-under-par. He began with an excellent eagle at the sixth hole and picked up further shots on the back nine before two dropped shots at the 15th and 18th cost him a share of the lead.

Overnight co-leader Henrik Stenson carded a round of one-over-par and remains in contention along with a group of players at four-under which includes Thomas Bjorn, Ernie Els and Trevor Immelman.

While a further shot back are Sergio Garcia, Ian Poulter and last weeks winner at Bay Hill, Vijay Singh.

Robert Allenby, who shared the lead after the opening round, is also in the group at three-under-par after a second round of two-over.
